| My excuse for not keeping up is that I have joined Facebook. It requires less faithfulness. And it's really handy for discovering juicy info about long lost friends. Hey, I just found out one of my friends is engaged!
Anyway....here's a quick update. I'm living in Nagoya (Japan!) with a lovely roomie named Anna and teaching English at 2 churches. I had my first two classes on Friday. They were both intermediate classes, so their English is much better than I would expect. I have really enjoyed getting to know my students and encouraging them to talk about themselves to me in English. Tomorrow (Monday) I have 2 childrens classes and Tuesday I have 2 childrens and 2 adult classes.
A couple more things...
The train system here, although in a smaller city, is more confusing than Tokyo's train system!!
English is a ridiculous language.
I'm experiencing what I have decided to call reverse TCK neurosis (I'll have to write book someday).
The first time I have ever been in a hummer was today....in Japan!!
I like going to the grocery store on a bike.
I'm working on my own website (hmm....what are the chances of my being faithful with this?). It's still under construction, but the address is web.mac.com/purplesweetpea. BTW, the pictures come in really slow....I'll be working on that soon...
| I like to have a life plan.....under one condition.....the plan has to include lots of changes.
For instance. The plan I made at the end of my senior year/summer after: live in the lower main land and work for two or so years, make money, pay off loans, then go to grad school. Bad plan. Two years is a very, very, very long time for someone who has moved every few years of her life and who conceptualizes a year in terms of a school calendar...with summer and Christmas to break it up. And especially bad when I'm in a job that I don't like and doesn't get me anywhere (but then, I couldn't have known that I would be in that situation when I made the plan).
Better plan: December 12, fly to Japan and spend the better part of a month at home with my family. January 5 or so, move to Nagoya and teach English for 6 months with at least two significant breaks for travel. July, move back to Tokyo with my family and find a good paying English teaching job (I hope!!). Fall of '07, take the GRE and GRE psychology subject test and apply for grad school. Summer of '08 head back to North America (if that's where I end up going to school) and prepare for grad school. Ahh....listen to all that change.....good plan.
And yet....it's still only a plan. Plans change. After all, only a few weeks ago I had absolutely no idea I'd be up and moving to Japan in 2 weeks. There's a big change. And a good change. That's nice. And a change that God has confirmed for me over and over. That's GREAT.
| And......ALL my support has been raised!! Yay for God providing!! | | |
| Yes, it's true, I'm moving to Japan.
My flight is in 19 days and counting. My life now: the last few weeks of work (thankfully), last minute shopping, getting rid of stuff, catching the flu, and figuring out a MILLION details. These next 2 and a half weeks are going to go by fast and I just hope that I can get everything done in time! Then it's home for Christmas!! Really looking forward to that. Then off to be an English teacher and learn to live independently in Japan.
Another adventure! Another challenge! Another life change! Do I find normalcy in change?
| Ah, people.....
The other day an American woman called and talked to my manager about booking rooms and actually asked if Canadians celebrate Christmas on the same day as Americans!! Of course the rest of my Canadian co-workers (I think that's the first time I've used that word...weird) and I had a good laugh about that one, and a lot of "wow, those ignorant Americans" comments. Oh wait, I'm American.
Another funny story: I was explaining to a couple what comes with the romance packages we offer and when I told them that they would get access to the pool and hot tub after hours, the woman got all excited and asked, "Are there any cameras in there??"
